Top Knots

I became obsessed with buns last fall when I was in London and my friend Heather rocked this unbelievably, amazing bun the entire time!  I even bought {this} for my hair to help mimic the same bun, but fail - I can not get my hair to look as effortlessly, beautiful as these... xxoo.

Update 7/28 - If you are stopping by from pinterest - WELCOME to my blog!! :) Please stay and browse around a little... or you can follow my blog (on the right hand side under 'My Readers') and come back later when you have more time! I post daily about my favorite inspirations on fashion, home decor, photography and of course - hairstyles! ;) PS. I am proud to say that I have mastered the top knot! It's my favorite go to hairstyle for day or night! :)

oh man i know the feeling of not being able to achieve that same effortless, gorgeous look. And i love top knots so much, but it just never comes out the way i want it. Hopefully we'll be able to achieve it someday!

I love that this is in, I wear my hair high up almost every day. I call it the lazy mom look :)

The best top knots always come when you're hardly trying, which can be very frustrating. I have been desperately trying to mater the sock bun but haven't quite gotten it down yet.

do you feel like the doughnut helps though? i have very fine hair so trying to make these knots is almost impossible...

Don't feel bad - if I try to do a bun of any sort, I look like a sumo wrestler! My hair is just too short right now haha :)

Happy Friday, girl!

LOVE third row left...I die! I have really fine hair, so sadly, the "messy bun" doesn't work with my hair...I have always tried to make it work anyway!

You should try the sock bun trick. You can you tube it... it works well with any hair but my coarse thick hair. ;)

How pretty! I have the same thing you got in Boots, but it still doesn't look like on the photos. Any tips? Maybe I need to cut a fringe?

You've inspired me to try a top bun today ... Im sure my hair will fall out of it and be so so scary, haha ... but when done right, they are so very beautiful.

I used a trouser sock and cut the toe off. I found anything else has too slippery of a texture to hold in. A little bit of Aveda Phomolient and doing it while the hair is damp helps.

They're all so cute! How do you do the top knot (the first picture on the top)?!

I have mastered my top knot by using the hair doughnut, it works wonders!!! I have very very fine hair, and the doughnut bulks it up, makes it look full and fabulous. You can get them anywhere like clairs or Ardenes, they come in black, brown and blonde! Highly suggest for the fine haired ladies

i wish i knew how to do this to my own hair! i've tried.. but failed many times!

I got this from Bebebirdbeck's blog, but put your hair into a high top of your head ponytail and loosely tie it. Then just tease it to give it more body and pull it in a bun. Works great for top buns! I don't even tie it first. I just pull my hair up and start teasing away and it gives me great volume for buns.

Wow the top knots are just fab!Love them!I'll try to get the doughnut to practice and read the recos ;-) my hair is just about to my shoulders but it's curly and heavy so need to figure out how to keep it up (same story with ponytail where my hair is tight on my head and then full volume after the knot :-/ )
The blog looks amazing..just discovered!

My sister was able to do one for me last weekend. Key is dirty hair and a teasing comb. Hopefully I can replicate it on my own. We'll see.

Hi Ashley!
Absolutely LOVE your blog! I noticed that you also are a merchandise planner. I do have some questions for you if you have time for any. I am trying to get into the wedding industry. I thought you might have some tips or suggestions since you have some wedding links. Please email at sboulware239@yahoo.com if you get a chance! Thanks :)

The messy bun works best for me the day when it's been straightened. I definitely have my fair share of fails, though.

Courtney Delaney said...

can you make a tutorial on how to do this???

Keleigh said...

Since my hair isn't that long/fine and is curly, I put it in a high pony, tease the tail and kinda wrap the ends around the base...makes it look like I have enough hair for a wrap-around bun :)

I love a top knot, but I still need to wok out, how to make it look soooooo good. I am still trying. I love the first one.

Now that summer is in I am again finding myself with my hair up more and more. I have super super fine hair but always turn to a bun- when I'm feeling a little sassy I do a poodle puff with my bangs to add flair : )

Sock Bun! You don't need to spend money on things to help you create a donut bun. Just grab an old sock, cut the end off (where your foot goes) and roll up the rest of the sock into a donut shape. (long soccer socks work the best because they are long and can create a thicker or thinner donut to fit your type of hair)
